Disaster Communications
Build the plan before you need it
Off-grid radio can be useful when normal communications are unavailable, but it should be treated as one part of a broader preparedness plan — not a replacement for emergency services.
01 · Configure ahead of time
- Update devices before deployment.
- Confirm every radio is using the intended regional settings and configuration.
- Give devices understandable names.
- Test messaging between the radios you expect to use.
- Keep written setup notes and charging instructions with the equipment.
02 · Plan power
A radio that cannot be powered is not useful infrastructure. Consider batteries, USB power banks, vehicle power, solar charging, spare cables, and cold-weather performance.
03 · Test range locally
Do not assume a published range will match your neighborhood. Buildings, trees, terrain, antenna placement, interference, device settings, and elevation all affect real-world performance.

- Elevation / terrain
- Power setup
- Distance tested
- Messages successfully received
- Conditions and date
04 · Understand the limitations
Mesh communications can have gaps, delays, congestion, configuration problems, dead batteries, or hardware failures. Critical emergency information should use the most appropriate available emergency channel or service.
05 · Protect sensitive information
Avoid broadcasting or publishing private addresses, personal information, security-sensitive infrastructure details, or anything that could put people at risk.
