Radio Setup
This checklist is intentionally conservative. Meshtastic changes over time, so use the official documentation for firmware-specific details.
1. Flash current firmware
Connect the radio with a known-good data USB cable and use the official Meshtastic flasher when your device is supported.
Open the Meshtastic Web Flasher →2. Install a client
Meshtastic provides clients for major platforms, including Android, Apple platforms, and a web client. Pick the client that matches your phone or computer.
Official client documentation →3. Set the region
Choose the regulatory region that matches where the radio will be operated. In the United States, do not select a different country’s region just to access different channels or power settings.
4. Give the node an identity
Choose a short node name and a useful long name. Avoid putting sensitive personal information into public node names.
5. Configure channels
Channels determine who can read channel traffic. Treat public channels as public communications. Use direct messages or appropriately configured private channels when you need privacy, and understand that radio traffic is still subject to the limitations of the technology.
6. Test locally
Start with two radios a short distance apart. Confirm that they can see one another, then increase the distance and change locations. Record what works.
7. Improve the antenna before chasing transmit power
A good antenna installation, clear surroundings, appropriate coax, and elevation can make a major difference. Follow the device and antenna manufacturer’s limits.
